2010 DAIRYLAND CLASSIC - June 4, 2010

Jared Mees of Clio, Michigan claimed his second consecutive Dairyland Classic crown on Friday night with a come-from-behind ride to best Joe Kopp of Mica, Washington and defending AMA National Singles Champion Henry Wiles of Blanchard, Michigan in the 20-lap 450cc Professional Division final at the Sheboygan County Fair Park.

Thirty-one professional racers from ten states comprised the most star-studded field in Dairyland Classic history – five riders represented thirteen A.M.A. Grand National Championships between them. Kopp, the 2002 Dairyland winner, clocked in the fastest qualifying lap at 17.252 sec (69.557 mph), with Mike Avila (Madera, California), Mees, Rob Pearson (Morton, Illinois), and Wiles rounding out the top five. All thirty-one pros qualified within ¾ of one second of each other on the 1/3-mile clay oval.

Three-time A.M.A. Grand National Champion Kenny Coolbeth (2003 & 2008 Dairyland champ) claimed the fastest heat race win and thereby earned the pole position for the main event. Jethro Halbert (Graham, Washington) and Mees won the other two heat races, while Matt Weidman (Westerlo, New York), seven-time A.M.A. Grand National Champion Chris Carr (Fleetwood, Pennsylvania) and Pearson won the three semi-finals.

Kopp sliced through the field to win the Jim Sumner Memorial Dash for Cash, over Wiles and Pearson. Kopp had a back-row start for the Main event, and felt he had found a chassis set-up that would allow him to slice through the field again.

Coolbeth squandered his pole position with a terrible start in the final, finishing the first lap in sixth. Wiles grabbed the early lead on the National #1-plated Kawasaki with Halbert hot on his tail. Mees started in fifth spot, but muscled his way into third by lap 2 and began hounding Halbert, working past on lap 4. Four laps later Mees passed Wiles entering turn three and immediately began to stretch a big lead. Kopp, meanwhile, was indeed slicing through the field. He started in 10th, completed the first lap in seventh, and moved into the number four slot on lap 7. Two laps later he made a big move around the outside and passed both Halbert and Wiles for the runner-up spot. As if sensing the challenge now that Kopp was in second, Mees put together a handful of stellar laps to pull even further ahead, scoring a comfortable win at the finish. Coolbeth recovered to snatch fourth place on the last lap from Halbert.

Terry Vestal borrowed Dan Vrana’s 2009 Vintage-winning Triumph T140 and powered to a hard-fought victory in the Vintage Division. Lee Johnson (1979 Yamaha TT500) and Vrana (1968 Harley-Davidson KR) fought back and forth throughout for the runner-up spot but were unable to unseat Vestal for the win. Dan Murre (1976 Yamaha XS650) overcame a poor start to claim the fourth spot at the flag over Louie Lauters (1977 Yamaha XS650) and Mark Muth (1980 Harley-Davidson XR750).

Soren LeValley, Trey Johnson, and Lexi Hoffman claimed the three 250cc Amateur division heat races, with Hoffman’s time earning her the pole position for the main event. Johnson – the 2008 250cc Amateur winner – grabbed the holeshot in the final and never looked back. Dave Kilkenny held the runner-up spot until the mid-way flags when he succumbed to the charges of both Nikki Spore and Hoffman.

Charlotte Kainz claimed the 85cc Youth heat race win and appeared set to claim her unprecedented third division win in a row, but Jacob Jesko had other ideas, grabbing the holeshot and leading every lap. Kainz tried to find a way past – nearly pitching it away on lap six – but could not make the pass and had to settle for second. Parker Lange, Samuel Wolf, and Alec Muth rounded out the top five.

Rob Reitz and Cory Mahlum claimed the two Quad Division heat races, with Reitz sitting on the pole for the main event. Reitz grabbed the holeshot with Mahlum in tow and they would finish in that order. Jeremy Hunt worked his way past Chuck Calvert on lap nine to secure the final spot on the podium.

The pro riders loaded up and headed to an A.M.A. Grand National event in Indiana Saturday night.
