2008 DAIRYLAND CLASSIC - August 22, 2008

AMA Grand National Champion Kenny Coolbeth of Morris, CT, stole the 24th annual Dairyland Classic Presented By Revolution Performance by positioning himself to be in the right place at the right time, twice.

Thirty-two racers from nine states and Australia competed in the 450 Pro Division, including nine of the top eleven racers in the current AMA Grand National Championship Series standings. Mees collected the Fast Qualifier honors with a 16.118 second lap around the 1/3-mile clay oval (74.451 mph). Nick Cumming’s one-year-old track record of 15.311 was never in jeopardy. Halbert clocked in secod fastest, with John Lewis (Brandamore, PA), JR Schnabel (Campbellsport), and Shaun Russell (San Jose, CA) rounding out the top five. Coolbeth’s best lap was only good for 10th fastest.

Mees dominated the 1st heat race, taking Sam Halbert (Graham, WA) along to the main event. Jethro Halbert controlled the second heat race over Russell, while Schnabel easily claimed the third heat race over Coolbeth. Jesse Janisch (Hartford, WI), Jake Johnson (Franklinville, NJ) and Henry Wiles (Blanchard, MI) claimed the semi wins.

The twelve-rider 450cc Pro Main Event featured seven riders who boast a combined 56 National Championship event wins and 3 National Championships among them. Russell nailed the holeshot, but Jethro Halbert muscled his way past at the apex and Russell ran out of real estate, falling to sixth behind Mees, Coolbeth, Sam Halbert, and Schnabel. The Halbert-Mees-Coolbeth freight train immediately started to pull a gap on the Halbert-Schnabel battle for fourth. On lap 4, Mees made a tremendous run up the inside exiting turn 4 and stole the lead from Jethro Halbert.

“When I passed Jethro” (on lap 4), I figured he’d go backwards”, stated Mees, who held the point until lap 13. “So when I felt pressure (later on) I figured it was Kenny, but then Jethro got back under me”. Halbert had found a new line that gave him a good drive off the corners, and dove under Mees as they exited turn four completing lap 13. Coolbeth followed right behind and in the blink of an eye, Mees dropped from first to third.

Halbert felt confident he could hold everyone off for the remaining six laps, but he made a little slip in turn four on lap 17 and that was all Coolbeth needed to get past. A lap later Mees nearly pitched his Honda away exiting turn 2, after which he settled in for a third-place finish. Halbert hounded Coolbeth to the finish but could not find a way past. Coolbeth claim his second win at the prestigious event, by a margin of 0.376 seconds.

“Both Jethro and Jared were going great tonight”, commented Coolbeth in winner’s circle. “They each made one mistake and I was right there.”

Charlotte Kainz claimed a hard-fought victory in the 85cc Youth Division, besting Zachary Ryan and Morgen Mischler in an eight-lap duel to the finish. Trey Johnson out-dueled Jake Cunningham and Robbie Treinen for the 250cc Amateur title. Dan Lauters outran Dan Vrana and Dave Kilkenny in the Vintage Division. Ben Jaster bested Rob Reitz and Matt Schmitz in the Quad Division.

Schnabel claimed his third victory in the Jim Sumner Memorial Dash For Cash, holding off the late charges of Mees, who won the Dash last year.
