Main Qualifying Heats Semis Dash For Cash

Jammin’ Jared Mees topped Sammy Halbert and Chris Carr to claim his third consecutive Dairyland Classic Presented by Hoban Brothers title on the immaculate 1/3-mile clay oval at the Sheboygan County Fair Park. Despite a persistent 40mph wind, the track developed a wide dust-free groove that offered plenty of passing all night long in front of a near-capacity crowd.

Twenty-seven Pro/Experts from ten states signed up for the 27th annual event that boasted an $11,295 payout. Mees served notice early, claiming the Fast Qualifier bonus by setting a 16.642 second/72.107 mph lap on his Montgomery Cycle-sponsored Honda. Sammy Halbert, the current Grand National Championship points leader, Jesse Janisch, Hayden Gillim and Brock Schwarzenbacher rounded out the top 5 in qualifying.

The evening of surprised began when Pro Singles National Championship points leader Mikey Avila grabbed the holeshot in the first Pro/Expert heat race and scored the win over Mees. Sammy Halbert led the second Pro/Expert heat race from start-to-finish. Brock Schwarzenbacher’s stranglehold on the final transfer position evaporated when his muffler came off on lap 5, allowing Jethro Halbert, Chris Carr, and JR Schnabel past, with Jethro taking the transfer. Janisch led Pro/Expert heat #3 the entire way with Jeremy DeRuyter following into the main event. Janisch would sit on the pole for the main event.

Schnabel led Jimmy Wood and Schwarzenbacher into the main from the first Pro/Expert semi; Michael Martin led Carr and Kenny Coolbeth home in the second Pro/Expert semi. Each qualifying event was faster than the previous, with Martin’s semi marking a new six-lap track record for the facility at 1:43.483.

Jake Cunningham grabbed the holeshot in the Jim Sumner Memorial Dash for Cash over Jethro Halbert and Kenny Coolbeth and led the first four laps. Behind him, Sammy Halbert was putting on a charge from the fifth starting spot, moving into third on lap 2 and second on lap 4, and then grabbing the lead under Cunningham in turn three as they charged towards the white flag. Mees and Jethro Halbert also slipped under Cunningham to set the final order.

The Pro/Expert main event had Jethro Halbert on the inside pole, with Sammy Halbert, Janisch, DeRuyter, Mees, and Avila alongside; Schnabel had the inside pole on the second row, with Coolbeth, Schwarzenbacher, Wood, Carr, and Martin to his right. Janisch timed the light perfectly and led the pack into turn one with Jethro Halbert, DeRuyter, Sammy Halbert and Carr – from the second row - right behind. Sammy Halbert moved under DeRuyter in turn 3 and then under Jethro up the front straight to move into second place. By lap two, the Janisch-Halbert-Halbert-Carr freight train had opened a gap on the DeRuyter-Mees-Schnabel tussle which had a similar gap over the rest of the tightly-bunched field. Carr got a drive up the inside of Jethro up the front stretch on lap 3, but ran out of real estate and had to take evasive action to prevent taking both riders out. Carr appeared to lay his Honda down onto its cases and somehow held onto the bouncing bike all the way to the apex, where he twisted the throttle and made the pass. DeRuyter checked up, allowing Mees to move past into the fourth position. Later that lap, Sammy would pass Janisch up the front straight and take the point for the first time. Sammy would pull a gap until overcooking the groove in turns 3-4 on lap 10, allowing Janisch to re-take the lead. At the cross-flags it was Janisch-Halbert-Carr-Mees. Two laps later, Halbert would re-take the lead by diving under Janisch in turn 3, while Mees dove under Carr and Janisch at the exact same moment to take over second. Janisch couldn’t get back in line quick enough and dropped to fourth behind Carr. Mees immediately put a wheel under Halbert going into 3, but pulled back and waited another lap before pulling the trigger and taking the lead as they came out of turn four to complete the 14th lap. Halbert’s attempt to retaliate in turn 3 on the next lap nearly put him on the ground, as his Yamaha found a slick spot at the apex and went full-lock sideways. Halbert kept it on two wheels and maintained his grasp on second place, but the gap back to Carr was now gone and worse yet, his steel shoe had come off his left boot, although it was dangling by the strap for another lap or two before it, too, finally broke off. One lap later and Jethro’s fine ride if fifth came to an end when his rear tire went flat in turn 3; his exit moved Coolbeth up to fifth and Martin up to sixth. From there, it was smooth sailing for Mees, who opened up some breathing room to win an unprecedented third consecutive Dairyland Classic over a tight group of Halbert, Carr, and Janisch. Coolbeth came home fifth over Martin, with Wood, Schnabel, Schwarzenbacher, DeRuyter, and Avila rounding out the running order at the end.

Mees set a new 20-lap record of 5:36.006, over 8 seconds faster than the previous record, set in 2008 by Coolbeth.
